The tricky ones: friend, laugh and because
Friend has an i that you cannot hear. Laugh uses gh to make an f sound. Because has an au that sounds like a short u or o. A memory trick helps: "I will be your friend to the end" reminds kids that friend ends in end.

Frequently asked questions
What spelling words do 2nd graders learn?
Second graders usually learn vowel teams like ee, ea and ai, words with -ing and -ed, and tricky words like because and friend. Many lists also include family and school words.
Why is friend hard to spell?
Friend has a silent i, so kids often write frend. A popular trick is to remember that a friend is there to the end, since the word ends in e-n-d.
What is a vowel team?
A vowel team is two letters that work together to make one sound, like ea in clean or ee in sleep. Second graders learn many of them.
How can I make spelling fun for a 2nd grader?
Turn the list into a game, like this Hangman. Let them earn a streak and try to beat it. Mixing short game rounds with writing a few words works well.
Is Easy mode or Normal better for 2nd grade?
Start in Easy mode on new words, then switch to Normal once a word feels familiar. Normal mode is a good check before a test.
How long should spelling practice take?
Ten to fifteen minutes a day is plenty for most second graders. A few rounds of Hangman plus writing three words is a solid session.
What comes after this list?
Once your child is confident, move on to the 3rd grade list, which adds silent letters and longer words like beautiful and remember.
Why does laugh use gh for an f sound?
Long ago, the gh in laugh stood for a sound made in the back of the throat. Over time people started saying it as f, but the spelling never changed. Rough and enough work the same way.
