Frequently asked questions
What makes a Hangman word hard?
Few vowels, rare letters and short length. A word like jinx has only one vowel and two rare letters in four spots, so most early guesses miss.
Which letter appears most in these hard words?
Z appears in more than a quarter of the list, far more than in normal English. I and Y also show up a lot. That is why the usual E-first plan struggles here.
Is xylophone a hard Hangman word?
It is moderately hard. It is long, which helps, but X, Y and PH are uncommon. Most players get O and E quickly and then get stuck.
Are hard words good for kids?
For confident readers aged nine and up, yes. They teach unusual spellings like rhythm and sphinx. Younger kids may get frustrated, so start with the easy list.
Is the hard list the same as Hard mode?
Not quite. This page always plays this list. Hard mode is a level you can turn on with any list; it picks the shortest and rarest-letter words in that list.
What does zephyr mean?
A zephyr is a soft, gentle wind. The word comes from the name of the Greek god of the west wind. Its Z, PH and Y make it a classic tough word.
How many hard words can most players solve?
It varies, but even skilled players miss some. Track your streak under the keyboard and try to beat your best.
What does sphinx mean?
A sphinx is a creature from old stories with a lion's body and a human head. The most famous is the Great Sphinx statue in Egypt. With one vowel and an X, it is a tough word to guess.
