This Hangman solver finds words that match a pattern of known letters and blanks. Type the pattern with underscores for blanks, add the wrong letters you already tried, and the solver lists every fitting word from a list of nearly 15,000. It also ranks the best letter to guess next.
How the solver picks the best letter
For each letter you have not tried, the solver counts how many of the matching words contain it in a blank spot. The letter found in the most matches is the safest guess, because it is right for the largest share of possible answers. That is the same thinking strong players use in their heads.
The solver also follows Hangman logic. If you have guessed A and it showed up once, a word with a second A in a blank is ruled out, because the game would have filled it in.
Using it to learn, not just to win
Try your own guess first, then check it against the solver's top pick. Over a few games you will start to see why certain letters are better, and you will need the tool less. Teachers can project the solver and ask the class to predict its answer.
Everything runs in your browser. The word list downloads once, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions
How do I type a pattern into the Hangman solver?
Type the letters you can see in their spots and use an underscore for each blank. A question mark or dot also works as a blank. For a five-letter word with A second and E last, type _a__e.
How many words does the solver know?
It checks nearly 15,000 common English words plus every word in our own lists. Very rare words, slang and names may be missing. If nothing matches, the answer may be one of those.
How do I find all possible words for a Hangman puzzle?
Type the pattern with an underscore for each blank, then add every letter that already missed. The solver lists all the words in its list that match, sorted with the best next letter on top. Fewer matches means you are close to the answer.
Is using a Hangman solver cheating?
It depends on the game. In a friendly paper game, agree on it first. As a learning tool, it is a great way to see which letters work best.
Why does the solver say no words match?
Check that each blank is one underscore and that letters are in the right places. Make sure your missed letters are really not in the word. The word may also be a name or a rare word outside the list.
Does the solver work for phrases?
It works best on one word at a time. For a phrase, solve each word on its own by typing its pattern separately.
Does the solver save what I type?
No. The search happens inside your browser, and nothing you type is sent to a server. Close the page and it is gone.
